When should I book my wedding cake?

Ideally, you should book your cake 6-12 months in advance of your wedding to ensure the availability of the baker with whom you would like to work.  If you are getting married sooner than this, check to make sure there is availability for the scheduled date prior to doing a tasting to save yourself time.

What should I expect at a cake tasting?

Wedding cake bakers may offer private cake tastings for you and your fiancé (and possibly parents and wedding planner), or they may hold open houses or group tastings at specified dates and times.  At a private tasting, you should be able to specify several flavors which you would like to taste, look at photographs of the baker’s past work, and talk about design ideas.  Some bakers may charge a fee for a private tasting, which is then usually deducted from the cost of your cake should you book with them.  At a group tasting, the baker will likely make their most popular flavors for you to try; depending on the size of the crowd, you may need to schedule a separate consultation with them to discuss design ideas.
